Advanced Evidence Law and Practice
for Civil, Commercial and Administrative Litigation
Why this is one CLE event you won’t want to miss
For the last several years, one of our most popular workshops has been our half-day program on “The Rules of Evidence in a Nutshell.” However, every time we run it, people tell us on the evaluation forms that they wish it were longer.
In response, The Canadian Institute has developed a new two-day course combining the law and practice of evidence. Designed for advocates and adjudicators who have the basics, whether from the pre-conference workshop or from law school, this course delves more deeply into some of the more vexing aspects of evidence law, as well as the skills involved in putting it into practice.
Included are updates on recent developments in core areas, such as hearsay and opinion evidence. Some sessions will deal with the tug of war between advocates wishing to obtain or use evidence and those claiming privilege, public-interest immunity or other barriers to admissibility.
You’ll also learn the right way to tender various kinds of evidence, and common mistakes to avoid. You’re sure to enjoy the session on the tricky area of proving electronic evidence, as well as the “short snapper” session on “How Do I Prove...” particular facts such as a criminal record, paternity, foreign law etc.
The list of instructors for this event is truly stellar. It includes leading litigators from the private and government Bars; the Chair of The Sedona Conference – Canada; a justice of the Federal Court of Canada; Commission Counsel to the Air India Inquiry; an electronic evidence consultant who was retained in the Enron litigation, amongst other headline-making cases; and the former Associate Deputy Minister of Justice of Canada responsible for civil litigation, national security and central agencies issues.
