Regulatory investigations are in the news a lot these days. But the high-profi le stories such as the Arar, Schreiber- Mulroney and Air India Inquiries are just the tip of the iceberg. Every day, hundreds of regulatory agencies across the country conduct investigations into human rights complaints, employment standards violations, professional misconduct, false advertising, pollution and myriad other cases. And with the introduction of numerous large administrative monetary penalties, the courts will be looking for even more scrupulous conduct of investigations.
These investigations are not always governed by the same rules as police investigations, although many of the same skills apply.
The Canadian Institute’s course on Conducting Regulatory Investigations is designed to bring together investigators for two days of intensive training in the core skills of the job.
Starting with the basics of administrative law that apply in the regulatory context, the course will move on to cover every phase of the investigation, from planning through writing the final report. The course will incorporate practical exercises that will improve your skills and confidence levels.
New for this offering of the course is a session on electronic evidence, a growing and challenging area.
